LIL’ LUFFERS

ages 5 and 6

class schedule:  one-week sessions  beginning on 6/25, 7/2, 7/9, 7/16, 7/23, 7/30, 8/6, 8/13, 8/20 :  mornings only
Sesson Cost:  $200

This one-week class is for our youngest sailors looking to have fun on and around the water.  Your child will be introduced to the basic of sailing with a focus on improving comfort and confidence in sailboats while developing respect for our marine environment.  Classes will primarily be taught on our stable fleet of J/22s, giving sailors a great introduction to Casco Bay as they learn how to operate a boat.  This 3-hour class meets every morning for a week.

 

FEARLESS FROSTIES

ages 7 and 8

class schedule:  two-week sessions beginning on 6/25, 7/9, 7/23, 8/6: mornings only
Sesson Cost:  $330

This two-week class is for beginner sailors looking to take the helm.  The classic Frosty is the perfect boat for your child to develop independence and confidence out on Casco Bay.  This class stress safety, fun and learning!  Our 3-hour morning sessions run for two weeks so that these little sailors have plenty of time to get comfortable, learn new skills, and create friendships with their fellow sailors.

 

OPTIMISTS

ages 9 to 12 (and 100 lbs. or less)

class schedule:  two-week sessions beginning on 6/25, 7/9, 7/23, 8/6: choose  morning, afternoon, or all day
Sesson Cost:  $330

Our Optimist classes are designed to accommodate all ability levels.  Optimists are small sailboats that are sailed solo.  Instructors are able to recognize and adapt to varied skill levels by arranging groups into appropriate classes as they master more skills.  Sailing games and STEM activities are interspersed throughout the day to keep the action going.  The sailors visit Peaks Island by boat, and make stops at Fort Gorges as well.  Classes are offered in the morning, afternoon, or full day.

 

OPTIMIST RACE TEAM SERIES

ages 9 to 13 (and 100 lbs. or less)

prerequisite:  at least two previous sessions at SailMaine or similar program
class schedule:  all day:  choose at least one three-week session 6/25-7/13, 7/16-8/3 with the option of adding additional weeks
Session Cost:  $990 for 3 weeks

This class is designed for experienced Opti sailors looking to take their sailing skills to the next level.  Sailors will learn the basic rules of racing, focusing on improving their tactics, boat speed, and sportsmanship.  The class will participate in the local Wednesday MIRC series, with the goal of traveling to the Junior Olympics, Maine State Opti Championshiops, and other local clinics and regattas.  Sailors are encouraged to participate in as many weeks of the program as possible, and minimum participation is two weeks.

 

420 SAILING

ages 12 to 17 (and over 100 lbs)

class schedule:  two-week sessions beginning on 6/25, 7/9, 7/23, 8/6: choose  morning, afternoon, or all day
Sesson Cost:  $330

This class is designed for sailors of all ability levels.  Sailing on two-handed dinghies, participants gain confidence and teamwork skills while having fun on Casco Bay!  Sailors will explore the area from Portland Head Light to Great Diamond Island with stops at Peaks Island and Fort Gorges throughout the two-week session.

 

420 RACE TEAM SERIES

ages 13 to 17 (and over 100 lbs)

prerequisite:  at least two previous sessions at SailMaine or similar program
class schedule:  all day:  choose at least one three-week session 6/25-7/13, 7/16-8/3 with the option of adding additional weeks
Session Cost:  $990 for 3 weeks

This class is designed for experienced 420 sailors or former Opti racers looking to take their sailing skills to the next level.  Sailors will learn the basic rules of racing, focusing on improving their tactics, boat speed, and sportsmanship.  The class will participate in the local Wednesday MIRC series, with the goal of traveling to the Junior Olympics and other local clinics and regattas. HIGH SCHOOL PREP WEEK

ages 13 to 17 (and over 100 lbs)

class schedule:  afternoons the week of August 20th
Session Cost:  $50

This class is designed for high school sailors and rising 8th graders who want to gain a competitive edge going into the high school sailing season. Through on-the-water drills, this class will focus on advanced boat handling, strategy, and the racing rules of sailing as well as conditioning for the season.

 

LASER RACE TEAM

ages 13 to 18 (and over 100 lbs)

prerequisites:  must have own Laser sailboat; must have taken three or more Opti or 420 classes
class schedule: afternoons 6/25 - 8/17
Session Cost:  $1500

This class is designed for serious sailors who enjoy competition on an individual level, but enjoy being on a team. The curriculum includes sail trim for speed, regatta preparation, conditioning, boat maintenance, racing rules and tactics, understanding the wind, starts, boat speed, first beat strategy, downwind speed and tactics, and rule 42 and body movement. The primary emphasis for this team will be regatta travel to selected local and regional national regattas. Parents will be expected to attend periodic parent meetings and share responsibility for providing transportation and on-site regatta assistance during the season.

 

STEM ADVENTURE

ages 9 to 17

class schedule: two-week sessions beginning on 6/25, 7/9, 7/23, 8/6:  afternoon only
Session Cost:  $350

This is a class for adventurous sailors who want to sail beyond the buoys. It will include sailing themed STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) components based on the US Sailing REACH curriculum. Fun and insightful experiments and games will enhance the sailing experience. This class is designed for the teenage sailor with little or no sailing experience, or for those who would prefer to emphasize recreation and learning rather than racing. Destination sails in Casco Bay, navigation, boat handling, and seamanship will keep participants engaged while promoting the broader knowledge of the sport. The students will sail in SailMaine’s J/22 keelboats.

 

APPRENTICE PROGRAM

age 15

prerequisites:  must have previous sailing experience at SailMaine
class schedule: four-week all-day sessions, pick Session 1 (6/25 - 7/20) or Session 2 (7/23 - 8/17)
Session Cost:  $300  Full Summer:  $500

This program is a perfect opportunity for junior sailors to experience teaching classes, get a bit of guided instruction using a powerboat, and practice their sailing skills throughout the summer. Apprentices are expected to support the instructors in every way possible by acting as role models, demonstrating on-water drills, and even leading chalk talks. As usual, this program includes a week of High School Prep at the end of the summer. This summer’s apprentices will not only learn the ins and outs of what it takes to be a sailing instructor, but will become stronger sailors, too!  Potential apprentices will be asked to submit a one page essay on why they want to be an apprentice, and how their skills and talents will support this program.

 

BELGRADE LAKES SAILING PROGRAM

ages 9 to 17

class schedule: week-long sessions beginning 7/9, 7/16, 7/23, 7/30, 8/6, 8/13: 9-12 year olds in AM; 12-17 year olds in PM
Session Cost:  $175

Based out of the Belgrade Community Center for All Seasons, SailMaine offers morning Opti classes and afternoon 420 classes for beginner and intermediate sailors on Great Pond. These one-week classes teach kids the skills to be lifelong sailors and gives them another reason to love and appreciate the beauty of Great Pond!

 

CENTERBOARD YACHT CLUB - SOUTH PORTLAND

ages 9 to 12

class schedule: week-long sessions beginning 6/25, 7/2, 7/9, 7/16, 7/23, 7/30: choose morning, afternoon, or all day
Session Cost:  $175

CYC in South Portland is a great option for busy summer schedules that need flexibility! CYC offers one-week sessions from June 25 to August 3.  Students will have fun on the water while learning the language of sailing, rigging, boat handling and steering in JY Trainers and Optimist dinghies.
