4/12 at Hingham
From Coach Mike Siepert:
Hi All,
I think we experienced just about every weather imaginable yesterday, before, during, and after our trip to Hingham. From hail storms and squall early in the AM prompting phone calls to make sure we were still on, to warm, light air, drifting conditions (briefly) while at Hingham, to a FRIDGID E’ly fog, with winds to 20 knots causing us to not run the last two races for safety reasons.
We had 5 teams using 6 boats, so we decided on a single division format, fleet race, using modified port triangle for the course. Each race require the course to be changed, as the winds clocked from a light, warm SW’ly with lots of sunshine, to a Warm and blustery NW’ly, then continued around to the NE then East, and built to about 15 to 20 knots, bringing with it a fog and a 15 degree drop in temperatures. I did remember my foul weather gear, so it did not actually rain on us while on the course. That waited for the drive home, coupled with an intense set of lightning bolts between the buildings in Boston while on I 93.
We definitely learned the importance of keeping our heads out of the boat, and sailing to the next breeze. The winds were shifty, and those that looked for the breeze found it, and made out well. Hingham HS sailors and their coach Erica Dieselman were gracious hosts, and will be attending the Herreshoff Trophy at SailMaine later this season.
The scores were tallied as a total for each team, and ranked accordingly:
1. Hingham HS – 12 pts
2. SMHS – 14 pts, Kurt / Ben and Steven / Ness
3. Hingham HS – 17 pts.
4. Cheverus HS – 23 pts. Justin / Alexa
5. Portland HS – 28 pts. Ian / Parker and Mike / Eduardo
6. Cape HS – 31 pts. Alex A. / Alex M. and Rebecca / Will
A big thank you to the parent drivers some of who also helped out in the mark and committee boats, Jamie Carlson, Laura Labbe, Peter Dion, and Tony Armstrong without whom we would not have made it to Hingham.
See everyone on Wednesday for our regatta with Brewster Academy. |
