At Portsmouth Abbey
April 19, 2008
Today was truly a perfect day to be out on the water as a high school sailor. 4 Teams competed at the Portsmouth Abbey School out of the Bristol Yacht Club in Bristol, RI. Two teams from the Abbey sailed against a team from Portland and a mixed team from Cheverus and SMHS in 5 race head to head series. The conditions were beautiful seeing a SE breeze at 7-10 kts shift to S at 12-15 with clear blue skies and mid 70s temps. The first series between Portland and Abbey 1 proved to be a learning experience for the young Portland squad. The well trained Abbey team executed their strategies well and proved to be a bit too much for the Bulldogs. Meanwhile on the other end of the course a well balanced mixed Chev/SMHS team showed tremendous potential and speed. Better overall speed and a few well executed team racing moves opened the door for the team to take the series 4-1. A protest was heard resulting in a Chev/SMHS disqualification leaving them the eventual winner 3-2. The young Bulldogs took to the course again in their second series against the stronger of the two Abbey squads. Again Portland proved outmatched but had several good opportunities to talk to coaches about how to improve. In the final series of the day the team from Chev/SMHS walked allover the other Abbey team proving their overall dominance in this event. I would like to thank all of the parents and everyone who helped get this event together through all of the confusion.
