Cheverus Report

On Saturday the 19th Cheverus traveled down to Marion, Ma. to team race against Tabor and Milton. Both of theses teams are considered to be some of the best in the area, with Milton having won the National Team Race Championship 2007. The day brought us sunny warm weather and we were able to sail without our dry suits!
Winds started on Sippican Harbor with a light Southeasterly breeze at 5-8 knots. Later in the day as the land heated the sea breeze kicked to 10 -12 knots out of Southwest. Format was a two race series w/ five races to be completed in each race.  Course was a collegiate N. Race one against Tabor was challenging. As this was the first time that the 'core' of the Cheverus team racers had competed together against a top level team, it took a little effort to 'get back in the groove'. Finish position were close in all five races. Strong effort by Ian who was sailing after having dental surgery on Thursday! The team managed to win the last race w/ Emily and Amelie, Katti and Ben in the 1-2 positions.  Tabor wins.
Race two against Milton also proved also to be a challenge. This race was quite a bit closer w/ Cheverus winning two races against Milton. Congrats to Ian for handily winning the last race. It apparent that the crews were able to improve their roll tacks in this second race. Milton Wins.
This race series was an excellent venue for racing against two highly skilled teams. What can be learned from this? 1.) Our team one race pairings need sail w/ each other more. 2.) Our 'one on one' starts need some work. 3.) Our roll tacks need to be improved as the other teams were more efficient with greater speed coming out of tacks. 4.) Communication needs improvement.
