Deering High School became a recognized member of NESSA and ISSA in the spring of 2008. The 2008-2009 school year marks the inaugural season of an active and independent team for Deering sailors.

The Deering Sailing Team welcomes all interested students from Deering High School as members.

No experience is necessary, because unlike many High School sports the Deering Sailing Team offers a Learn to Sail level (in the Fall only) in addition to a Varsity sailing team. High School sailing is one of the few school sport activities where girls and boys can compete with each other on equal terms. The Deering Sailing Team practices at SailMaine, located at 58 Fore Street on the Eastern Prom in Portland. SailMaine is a non-profit sailing program that supports High School racing, adult sailing and junior sailing. SailMaine provides 36 Collegiate 420 class sailboats, access to the water, instruction, equipment, scholarships and sailing school facilities.
