SailMaine needs YOU! We are a thriving and growing program that has had a great deal of success providing sailing opportunities to the greater Portland community, mostly to Portland area youth sailors. We are a 501 c-3 nonprofit organization and rely utterly on program fees and donations to survive.

Just some of our successes include:

  • A flourishing summer junior program which offers low cost summer sailing to Portland area youth.

  • A successful high school sailing program in fall and spring that currently enrolls over 40 kids from 9 area high schools and has been responsible for the last two State Championship sailing teams, as well as the 2002 and 2003 Northern New England Championship sailing teams.

  • A growing University of Southern Maine sailing program, offering an active club or Learn to Sail program as well as a Racing Team which competes all over New England.

  • A successful partnership with Maine Special Olympics that has seen a number of local athletes gain access to the sport of sailing. Their success on the water boosts self confidence and helps develop lifelong skills.

  • SailMaine has served as host, co-host, or supporting organization for events such as the Healy Trophy (New England high school singlehanded championship), Northeast Sailing Triple Handed Championship (first rung on the ladder for the national Sears Trophy), the Sears Area A (ME, NH, VT, MA, RI) Championship, the Northeast Junior Olympics, PHRF Maine Championship, Maine Interclub Racing Circuit junior series, Maine Junior Team Race Series, Etchells New England Championships, and a number of other events.

  • SailMaine serves as a sponsor and fundraiser for number one ranked US Sailing Team members Mikee Anderson-Mitterling and Dave Hughes in their Olympic Campaign. On the strength of their victory at Kiel Week in Germany in 2005, Mikee and Dave were nominated for the 2005 US Sailing Rolex Yachtsman of the Year award, given annually to the very best sailors in the country. Dave is a native of Yarmouth and a former USM sailor and SailMaine coach.

SailMaine's programs are truly unique and necessary for Greater Portland and Maine as a whole. Nowhere else in this community can you find low cost sailing opportunities of the scale and quality offered by SailMaine and their professional staff of experienced, US SAILING certified instructors and coaches. SailMaine is truly a valuable community resource, and we need the support of the community to continue to be so.
