Eastern Series Two

On Saturday, April 15, USM hosted the second Eastern Series regatta of the spring at SailMaine. Four schools attended, and we raced in combined A and B divisions with eight boats on the starting line. After a two-hour delay ashore because of thick fog, we rigged up as the fog receded and got started. The winds were light and shifty out on the course, but there was enough wind to get four races off. Multiple course changes were needed to keep up with the shifting breeze which blew from the E, SE, S and SW, and not in that order. As we derigged the boats back at the docks after calling it a day, a light northwesterly gave way to a stronger northeasterly, capping off a three-hour period which saw the breeze come from almost every point on the compass. That last northeasterly brought in a line of thunderstorms which moved past us (not over us, thankfully) as we secured the boats and came in for the day.

USM had a good day despite the fluky conditions, beating out Bowdoin for third place in the four-boat fleet. The Huskies' day was highlighted by a "bullet" (first place finish) in the second race by Jon Steitzer and Dan Jussaume. The pair rode that victory to a second-place finish overall in B division. Check back again for more news as the Huskies finish up the season later this month.
