How to Join

USM Sailing is free and open to any USM student, and is supported by the University of Southern Maine Recreational Sports Department and by SailMaine. We have both a Learn-to-Sail or Club aspect and a Racing Team which competes against other New England colleges and universities. Requirements for participation in Club activities are solely that you be a USM student. Requirements for joining the Racing Team, including competing on weekends, are that you be a full-time undergraduate student with a GPA of at least 2.0 who has not used up his or her ICSA eligibility. The team owns lifejackets and dry suits; USM sailors should provide their own dinghy boots, hats, and gloves.
Our Racing Team is primarily a dinghy racing program. We compete as part of the New England Intercollegiate Sailing Association (NEISA) at events around New England in both Fall and Spring seasons, while our Club members learn the basics of sailing in the college's fleet of 18 Vanguard 420s. Club members are welcome to join the Racing Team once a certain skill level is reached.
