Volunteer Opportunities
We want you!

SailMaine is an organization that relies on volunteer assistance to ensure our programs operate as they should. Anyone who has time and interest can volunteer with a SailMaine program: sailing experience is not always a requirement. For more information on anything listed below, or to suggest other ways you can help, please contact us.
Volunteers are particularly needed in the following areas:
- Savvy marketing folks wanted!
SailMaine is looking for a few more people to join our Events and Marketing Committee. This group meets once a month during the “off season” (December - May) to help SailMaine with advertising and marketing advice. We utilize graphic artists and marketing gurus to help us create marketing materials for the programs and events we run.
- Event Committee Volunteers
We are looking for volunteers to join our many different event committees.
We have a variety of events throughout the year that support our core educational programming. They take a lot of volunteer support to be a success! Below are descriptions of the events and the roles involved:
- Open House:
The upcoming Open House is our 6th Annual. The event provides free sailboat rides in Portland Harbor for people ages 8 and older, with shore-side boat rigging, knot tying demonstrations and a marine yard sale among the fun activities.
The committee meets five times between January and June in downtown Portland for about an hour each meeting. People involved can give suggestions and feedback during the meetings and choose to take-on specific tasks such as media coordinator, sponsorship coordinator and so forth.
- Shakedown Regatta:
This will be our 5th annual regatta. It’s an opportunity for SailMaine sailors to get a chance to experience the thrill of PHRF (big boat) racing. PHRF racers can make connections with new sailors and potentially add them as crewmembers. This event is also a fundraiser for all of SailMaine's community sailing programs.
The committee meets five times between January and June. Locations vary between Portland and the Yarmouth/Freeport area. People involved can give suggestions and feedback during the meetings and/ orchoose to take-on specific tasks such as media coordinator, sponsorship coordinator and various other jobs/tasks.
- Corporate Regatta:
This years Corporate Regatta Challenge will be the 2nd annual event. The goal of the event is to raise awareness and funds with locally based corporations. The regatta took place in SailMaine’s 8 Ynglings, with each company competing for the Corporate Regatta Challenge Cup, donated by AGA Correa.
The committee meets five times between January and September in downtown Portland for about an hour each meeting. People involved can give suggestions and feedback during the meetings and choose to take-on specific tasks such as media coordinator, sponsorship coordinator and so forth.
- Soiree & Auction Fundraiser: This years Soiree & Auction will be the 5th Annual. The Soiree is SailMaine’s biggest fundraiser, with $12,000-15,000 in revenue raised through auction and ticket sales. It’s a social party with a cash bar, complimentary hors d’oeuvres, a band, and classy decor. People often are dressed nicely for the occasion.
The committee meets seven to eight times between January and September in downtown Portland for about an hour each meeting. People involved can give suggestions and feedback during the meetings and choose to take-on specific tasks such as media coordinator, sponsorship coordinator and so forth.
We also need help with:
- Media/PR assistance
- Creating an album with all of our newspaper clippings
- Site and boat Maintenance. Carpentry and boat repair skills welcome
- Office filing
- Development and Fundraising
