Downeast Fleet Racing Championship 2011

George Stevens Academy May 14-15, 2011
Horizontal Line

Maine Maritime Academy and George Stevens Academy hosted the 13th Annual Downeast Championship Invitational and the Maine State Championship Regatta in Castine, Maine. 17 schools or sailing centers from MA, NH, VT and ME competed with 130 sailors and at least 50 coaches, parents and support staff for two days in Smith Cove sailing a total of 16 races.

Saturday was a foggy morning with little wind but by the time the boats hit the water the fog had lifted and an easterly breeze filled in. There was only about 5 to 10 knots of wind E to SE with cloudy skies and a temperature of 52 but it made for consistent sailing of 12 races. Sunday brought lighter more southerly winds and a bit more precipitation. 'A' division sailed 2 races and with a lot of patience 2 more races were finished for B division.

Falmouth (ME) won both the Maine State and overall championship. Brewster Academy came in second place with Cheverus next to take third overall and second place in the Maine State. Tabor was fourth with Yarmouth taking the third place for Maine State. Thanks to all for coming out and sailing fair and skillfully. Looking forward to seeing you next year.
